Registration of death

To register death in the National registry of deceased according to the last known place of residence in the Republic of Serbia it is necessary to submit the following:

  1. Completed form (please find HERE) for registering death abroad. The signature of the applicant needs to be certified by a public notary if the application is not being submitted personally.
  2. Original Norwegian certificate of death (Melding om dødsfall) provided by the District Court certified with an Apostille stamp and translated into Serbian Cyrillic language.
  3. Valid passport or national ID card of the Republic of Serbia of the deceased person. If the deceased person did not have a valid Serbian passport or national ID card, it is necessary to submit any kind of document with proof of the last known residence in the Republic of Serbia.
  4. Proof of consular payment. 

Attention: original documents are being sent to the relevant authorities in the Republic of Serbia and they are not given back to the applicant.

Issuance of Permit for transferring human remains (Norway)

  1. Copy of a valid passport or any other document with a photograph. If the deceased does not have a valid passport of the Republic of Serbia it is necessary to submit proof of Serbian citizenship – Certificate. If the family is not able to supply us with any kind of document then an old document with a photograph although invalid is admissible.
  2. Original Norwegian certificate of death issued by the District Court in Norway (Melding om dødsfall) certified by an Apostille stamp (Filkesman). Without this document you will not be able to register death which occurred abroad with the relevant authorities in the Republic of Serbia.
  3.  Permit to transfer human remains (Laissez passé/Permit to dispose of or Transport Human Remains) issued by the local police station.
  4. Confirmation issued by the relevant health institution that the deceased has not suffered from any kind of contagious disease.
  5. Hospital extract containing clearly stated name and last name of the deceased, date and place of death as well as the cause of death.
  6. Proof of scheduled transport with the exact date and time if performed by air-freight. If the deceased is being transported by a car/van it is necessary to supply us with a confirmation by the funeral home about the route of travel stating the border crossing(s), registration plates, name and last name of the driver of the vehicle.
  7. Confirmation that the deceased has a secured burial place in the Republic of Serbia.
  8. Completed form for registering death.

Once the entire documentation has been collected please send us a scanned version to this email address konzularno@serbianembassy.no. After receiving confirmation that your documentation is in order you can schedule an appointment to collect the Permit for transferring human remains. Please make sure that you bring all original documents as well as your own identification document. We kindly ask you to inform us who is the applicant and what kind of relationship he/she holds with the deceased (brother, sister, child, grandchild, etc.).
